St. Paul Firefighters Memorial Wall

Largely unsung heroes are the courageous firefighters in our communities. When called upon, they put their lives on the line serving in various life-saving capacities.

One of the prominent leaders in the Saint Paul department is Fire Captain Mike Cox. Wearing several hats, one of the roles Captain Mike is charged with are the duties of EMS Supervisor; working in conjunction with Regions Hospital training firefighters in the knowledge and practices of Emergency Medical Services (EMS).

Mike also serves as the president of the Honor Guard (IAFF Local 21). A group that honors and commemorates the service of Saint Paul firefighters fallen in the line of duty, working in accordance to the wishes of their families.

More than eleven years ago Firefighter Shane Cliffton was the first fallen member of which Captain Mike oversaw the ceremonies. Always aware of other memorials, national and international, Captain Mike wanted to create a memorial for St. Paul. The passing of Fire Captain Chris Parsons in June of 2023 was the pivotal connecting piece prompting the creation of the “St. Paul Firefighters Memorial Wall”.

Working with Awards by Hammond, Captain Mike created individual memorial plaques representing each firefighter who’s cause of death was in the line of duty. Currently “The Wall” includes nearly seventy plaques. It is an honor no firefighter aspires to.

The Memorial Wall is incorporated into the lobby of the Saint Paul Fire Headquarters. It is seen by hundreds each year; firefighters, dignitaries and members of the public.
